Not So Deadmonton Series: Rock Jungle Boulders

Welcome back to Part 2 of my spanking brand new series, Not So Deadmonton (Part 1 in case you missed it). What’s on tap? It’s a brand new, bouldering hangout place: Rock Jungle Boulders. Legit! Happy to see Edmonton finally getting a bouldering only spot. It sounds like I’m a big climber but that I am not, I’m just very enthused for the sport.

You’ve probably heard of Rock Jungle. They have two other locations (Rock Jungle Fitness West End and Rock Jungle CrossFit). The former has bouldering, top rope and lead climbing. But we’re not talking about them so let’s focus on their newest venture. It’s located right by Grant MacEwan so prime DT location. Small gym space included.

Interesting that they’ll have a cafe, Dirtbag Café, opening up here. Good way to re-fuel after a hard sesh. Although, no offense RJB but I’d rather spend my money on Cafe Amore, only 2 minute walk away. SO good bruh.

Price list. Don’t even get me started. I’m way too cheap to ever buy a membership ($595.00 annual) here or pay drop in for that matter. Lucky, my buddy J was able to get us in for free. Hurray for people with memberships.

If you’re not so lucky, it’s $17.00 for a drop in ($14.00 for students). I guess it’s the same price as going to yoga or spin class. Still…

Thursday’s are 50% off drop in (1:00pm to 4:00pm) for students! Ah, to be young again. Shoe rentals ($5.00) and chalk bag ($2.00) will set you back a few bucks if you don’t have your own gear. FYI, climbing shoes suck balls. Major balls.

If you’re smart, save time signing the waiver online beforehand. Otherwise, it’ll take you awhile to fill out the form on their one crappy, slow iPad. After that, one of the employee’s will take you through a brief initiation, go over the safety rules and get you to practice falling properly. Then you’re on your own.

Lots of routes (or “problems” in bouldering lingo) to try. Pro tip: don’t go too hard or you’re forearms will hate you. Take your time (ie. take breaks), watch the regulars do their thing and maybe ask the cutie beside you for the “beta”.

That massive fan is great. You’ll actually get a good sweat on.

Something different for say date night or if you’re looking for a new way to get fit, I can’t think of a better workout other than squash.
