Shojo Izakaya

We were meeting up with a buddy and decided to go to Shōjō Izakaya for happy hour. It’s a Japanese spot that interestingly shares a space with Made by Marcus.

I’d made Friday evening reservations (for 5:15pm). We were given a tatami room; haven’t sat in one of those in ages. There’s a spacious, inviting outdoor court area out front. Service was good; attentive without being overbearing.

The happy hour menu is short and sweet (5:00pm to 6:00pm, 9:00pm to close) with 6 food items and four drink options.

2x Cherry sling ($10.00)
UntitledTheir spin on the classic Singaporean drink. Not too sweet, balanced and refreshing.

Honey butter soy edamame ($4.00)
UntitledSautéed in butter and honey garlic soy sauce. Sauce was sticky and really clung to the edamame. Pleasantly surprised by this appetizer.

Yaki udon ($10.00)
UntitledUdon with onion, scallion and a sweet seasoned soy sauce. Not sure why the onions were raw. The udon wasn’t yaki style but we still enjoyed it. If they added in some vegetable (like they described on the menu), it would have been better. The sauce/broth was solid.

Okonomiyaki fries ($7.00)
UntitledFries were drizzled with tonkatsu and mentaiko mayo. Plainest of the HH dishes that we tried. Would skip it next time.

Salmon sashimi ($7.00 for 5)
UntitledThe slices are on the small side, but to be expected based on the price. The quality of the salmon was good.

Chicken wings ($7.00)
UntitledThe special flavour of the evening was a chashu sauce ($0.50 extra). Nothing memorable about it. The chicken wings were nicely deep fried.
