Don Oso’s Restaurant has been on my list to try for awhile. It’s a family run Mexican/Chilean spot that specialize in quesabirria tacos. This is their OG location with a second location on Commercial Drive.
We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 5:45pm). The inside has only three tables inside (total of 10 seats) but most people were getting takeout. You order and pay at the counter first.
Menu is up on three screens; soft tacos, antojitos, birria, entrees, Chilean food, completos (Chilean hot dogs) and desserts.
They have $3.00 taco Tuesday (only for carnita and pollo). For the tacos, they offer three sauce options (verde mild, tomatillo picante and fuego red). Would be nice if they offered all three to try.
4x Tacos ($15.00)
They were out of chorizo so we tried the other four meats (pollo, carne asada, barbacoa and carnitas).
The best of the bunch was the carne asada ($0.50 extra) which came with a tasty guacamole.
The other three meats were similar; a touch on the dry side but passable. The tomatillo picante (spice level was mild) was tasty and helped with the dryness of the meats.
Burrito bowl ($13.50)
Rice, beans, pico de gallo, lettuce and sour cream. We opted for the carnitas (okay but again a touch dry). This was the saddest burrito bowl we’ve eaten. Tiny portion (there wasn’t enough rice for filler) and mundane, boring flavours.
Burrito ($13.50)
Same as the burrito bowl but in a flour tortilla. J ate his quickly but it wasn’t a very large portion for the price.
Was hoping for a satisfying meal but Don Oso’s disappointed. Guess we should have tried their quesabirria. Don’t think we’ll be back.
