It’s been too long since we’ve had freshly made pupusas but that’s exactly what Restaurante Morazan excels in. They’re a Salvadoran restaurant, run by a husband and wife combo, located in the Bakerview Plaza.
Hours. Note: closed on Sundays.
We dropped in on a Thursday (around 11:15am) when it wasn’t too busy but I’d recommend getting there early as food takes some time to come out of the kitchen. Lovely to see and hear the smacking of fresh pupusas being made to order.
All the customers were Hispanic, which was a good sign. Order at the counter, clean up your table and then go up to pay when you’re done. The menu is short and sweet with 9 items and two drink options.
There was a couple of daily pupusa specials that I would have liked to try.
Agua de fruta ($1.99 USD)
This was refreshing and fruity. Tiny bits of apple, honeydew, cantaloupe and pineapple. Without hesitation, would order this drink again.
Plato pollo (#3) ($8.00 USD)
Chicken with special sauce, beans, rice and salad. It also came with two tortillas (basically their pupusas without any filling) and a green salsa.
The salad was a mix of lettuce, tomato, beet, radish and cucumber. Generous portion of rice. Beans were good. Chicken was a touch dry. Decent but paled in flavour compared to the tamales and pupusas.
Tamales (#5) ($4.00 USD for 2)
Tamales that are stuffed with chicken, potatoes and green beans. These were fantastic; the masa was incredibly moist and loved how they added in some greens.
Pupusas (#1) ($5.00 USD for 2)
We opted for the pork and cheese.
It comes with the usual curtido, tomato salsa (light and refreshing) and green salsa (which had a pleasant underlying heat to it).
The pupusas were delicious, well balanced (not too cheesy) and filling. Most solo eaters were ordering this as their lunch.
Looking forward to coming back to Morazan to try the rest of their small menu!
