Ume Foods

We were looking for a lighter dinner and stumbled upon Ume Foods. This is a homey Japanese spot that does a variety of things. It’s next door to K-Town Pizzeria.

Hours.

We dropped in on a Friday evening (around 7:30pm). There’s four booth tables inside. Service was friendly and always a good sign when the staff is Japanese.

The menu consists of appetizers, sushi (maki, special rolls, sashimi, nigiri), donburi, tempura and bento boxes.

Prices are very reasonable with most items in the $7.75 to $13.25 price range.

Green tea ($2.00 pot)
DSC04495Standard but nice that they refilled this for us.

DSC04496

Katsu curry ($10.75)
DSC04497We opted for the breaded pork on rice with curry sauce.

DSC04500

Liked that it came with a small portion of salad.

DSC04499

The katsu was serviceable; good breading but the pork was a touch dry.

DSC04501

Curry sauce was solid but it soaks up all the rice. Wanted more to dip with the katsu.

Futo maki roll ($6.00 for 4)
DSC04502Egg omelet, spinach, sweet shitake mushroom and carrots. The shitake was the best part of these rolls.

Spicy tuna roll ($3.50 for 6)
DSC04503Chopped tuna, spicy mayo and green onion. These were my favourite rolls of the night. Good quality.

Smoked salmon roll ($5.00 for 8)
DSC04504Smoked salmon, cucumber, carrot, mayo and sesame. This one needed some kind of crunchy element.

Nigiri
DSC04506We tried the toro ($2.25), tamago ($2.00) and scallop ($2.75).

DSC04507

Toro was better than we expected.

DSC04509

Scallop was a good piece.

DSC04508

Liked how the tamago was slightly torched.

One of the better Japanese spots we’ve found in Kelowna. Super reasonable prices too.
