La Chapina

A weekend road trip down to Seattle meant our usual stop for lunch in Bellingham. We decided to try La Chapina, which specializes in mostly Guatemalan (and Mexican) food. It’s located next door to Asian 1.

We dropped in on a Friday for lunch (right at noon). It was shockingly not busy but it should be.

The inside is bright and colourful with a mix of tables and booths. Our server was fantastic; super sweet, genuine and came by to check up on us several times. Found out that they’ve only been open for 8 months.

There’s a lunch special menu (weekdays from 11:00am to 2:00pm).

The regular menu consists of fresh drinks, appetizers, breakfast, seafood, specialities, chicken, small plates and enchiladas & tacos.

Chips

Green salsa was a mix of avocado and tomatillos. Slight kick and creamy. Red salsa was also good. They also offer refills!

Horchata ($3.49 US)
DSC09535Fresh and homemade. Lots of cinnamon and vanilla flavour.

DSC09536

You also get one free refill which was completely unexpected.

Pupusa ($2.75 US)
DSC09537We tried the cheese and chicharron flavour. It comes with side of cabbage and tomato sauce.

Pupusa is made to order and was delicious.

Will be getting more next time.

Enchiladas rojas (L4) ($8.25 US)
DSC09550Two enchiladas in a red chili sauce. You choose between shredded chicken, ground beef and steak ($1.50 US extra). We went with shredded chicken.

It also comes with a salad, pilaf rice and black beans.

DSC09545

Black beans had good flavour and an enjoyable texture.

The enchiladas hit the spot.

Pollo asado (L6) ($9.95 US)
DSC09542Marinated and charbroiled chicken with homemade tortillas. There’s also a salad, pilaf rice and pinto beans.

DSC09543

The chicken was fantastic; addictively juicy and exciting. Seasoning was spot on. Seriously, this is one of the best chicken dishes I’ve had in a long, long time.

DSC09544

The pinto beans were also fantastic; B’s not normally a fan but this was one of the best iterations she’s eaten. We think it was cooked in pork fat as it had a very savoury, meaty flavour. Love that they come with full pieces of beans.

DSC09552

The tortillas are thicker (similar in style to the pupusas) and homemade. You get two but we were only able to finish one.

We’ll be back to try more Guatemalan dishes. Go give La Chapina some love.
