Yama Cafe

Yama Cafe has been on my list of places to try for too long. They’re a cafe that specializes in Japanese baked goods. You’ll find them close(ish) to Koko Japanese Restaurant.

We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (around 1:00pm) and it was packed. Service is friendly and sweet in typical Japanese fashion.

There’s a menu up on the wall when you first walk in along with a few other signs.

Afternoon dessert tea from 2:00pm to 4:00pm ($6.95). They make their own ice cream! Give me a scoop of hojicha.

They had a couple packs of mochi muffins ($3.00 for 5) that disappeared quickly.

There’s also a couple different types of tea for purchase.

Matcha latte ($4.00)
DSC06831They use good quality matcha. Latte was well balanced (B opted for half sweet).

5x Mochi muffin ($1.00 each)
DSC06829We tried the houjicha, kurogoma sesame, earl grey, azuki red bean and matcha. Muffins had a good texture and weren’t too sweet.

Tuna tataki ($12.95)
DSC06848Tuna tataki, white rice, salad, pickled daikon, ponzu sauce, ginger and Japanese chili pepper. The pepper added a touch of heat to the tuna. Tuna was fresh and again, good quality

Pork belly ($11.95)
DSC06850Boiled pork belly, teriyaki sauce, half boiled egg, white rice and a salad with cabbage pickles. The pork belly was tender and not too fatty.

We added the lunch set ($4.00) which included nukazuke (Japanese pickles), vegetable appetizer, daily soup and a mochi muffin (espresso flavour).

DSC06842

Loved the pickled carrots, celery and cucumber.

DSC06843

Mushroom soup was homemade and not too creamy.

DSC06844

The vegetables were just as good; mushroom, corn, tomato, wakame and green beans (with a delicious wasabi sauce on top).

Excellent flavours and attention to deal at YC. A little slice of Japan in Vancouver. Will be back!
