MDG Ma Dang Goul

We were starving so headed over to MDG (Ma Dang Goul) for a late dinner. It’s one of my buddy J’s favourite spots for Korean food. They’re a few doors down from Zakkushi and Ukrainian Village.

We dropped in on a late Monday evening (around 8:15pm) and it was reasonably busy. Lots of tables inside. Service wasn’t particularly good or bad but at least they brought out water and tea for us.

The menu is split into lunch specials, appetizers, BBQ, stir fry, rice, to share, soup, hotpot and summer specials. More options than expected. Click here to see the menu (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6).

Edamame
DSC09161Randomly we were brought this out to whet our appetite.

Rice ($1.95)
DSC09173Lame that we only got one rice bowl when we ordered two entrees. Not impressed.

Banchan
DSC09162Kimchi, bean sprouts, glazed potatoes and iceberg lettuce. You only can ask for refills ONCE. Never heard of that before from a Korean place.

Kimchi and glazed potatoes were decent.

Wasn’t impressed with the bean sprouts nor the iceberg lettuce (very blah).

Yachaejeon ($7.95)
DSC09169Vegetable pancake. The sauce didn’t add any flavour. More eggy than I’d prefer.

Jeyook bokum ($19.95)
DSC09174Stir-fried spicy pork with vegetables and rice cakes. The rice cakes had a good chewy bite but would have liked to see more. Pork was flavourful and good spiciness. Definitely overpriced for the portion size.

Daksin bulgogi ($17.95 combo)
DSC09175Stir fried chicken thigh marinated in extra spicy chili sauce. We picked the spicy tofu soup for our combo option.

DSC09170

I was surprised to find the tofu soup was my favourite dish of the night. Broth had good depth and a hint of sweetness. The chicken was tender but too salty.

DSC09177

I guess the romaine lettuce was provided to make your own wrap/sandwich.

They dropped off a pair of yakult kid sized bottles at the end of our meal.

MDG wouldn’t be my top choice with so many other solid Korean options in the downtown area. Can’t justify the higher price point.
