Machef

New Korean spots seem to be popping up all over the south side. We decided to try Machef, which is a few doors down from Sushi Wasabi.

We dropped in on a Sunday (around 1:00pm) for a late lunch. It was empty but there were a couple other customers that came in. Service is friendly and the chef even popped by a few times to say hello.

The menu is small; appetizers, mains and desserts for a total of 15 items.

Nicely marinated and good texture.

Rice ($1.50) – extra rice will cost you.

DSC06954Marinated thin sliced beef, vegetables, tofu and glass noodles. This comes in a big pot to share.

Broth is homey and simple; slightly on the sweet side.

Korean style pork cutlet ($16.00)
DSC06957Pork sirloin cutlet with house salad and gravy sauce. This was my favourite dish that we ordered.

Cutlet was perfectly breaded and the texture was fantastic.

Bo-ssam ($35.00)
DSC06950Boiled pork belly wraps with lettuce, seasoned radish and soybean paste. Another dish everyone loved. Pork belly was tender and juicy with the fat to meat ratio spot on.

Oddly, they don’t give much cabbage to wrap the meat in.

The dish also came with raw garlic, sliced jalapeños and an addictive sauce.

Ttukbaegi gamjatang ($13.00)
DSC06956Spicy pork bone soup with potatoes and napa cabbage. The broth wasn’t very spicy and found the flavours subdued compared to everything else.

Another solid Korean spot. Make sure you get the cutlet.
