O was in town so I suggested we check out a dim sum place that specializes in vegetarian food, Sun Bo Kong Vegetarian Restaurant. They’re sister restaurants to Po Kong (which is directly across the street from them).
Sign outside.
Hours.
We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (around 12:15pm) and it was busy. Luckily, we were able to get a table right away but if you’re a bigger group, make a reservation. The inside is typical Chinese fashion. Service is standard.
Click here to see the full menu (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7). There’s also a picture menu (1, 2, 3 and 4).
There’s a couple menus but we were here strictly for dim sum. Prices range in the $4.50 to $6.25 range.
4x Tea – lame that they charge $1.10/person for tea. I’m sure if you bring your Asian grandma, they can get it nullified.
Steamed rice flour roll with pea tips ($6.25)
Interestingly, they bring the sauce on the side for you. Decent but pricey.
Panfried turnip cake ($4.50)
This was good. Slightly pan fried but not greasy at all. Think a healthy, cleaner version of the usual lo bak go.
Vegetable shrimp dumpling ($4.95)
Their version of ha gow. Was okay but nowhere near the real thing.
Steamed mushroom dumplings ($4.95)
Tasty filling and dumpling had a chewy satisfying texture.
Panfried veggie bun ($5.25)
The bun wasn’t pan fried enough.
Mini 5-grain wrap ($5.25)
Wild rice, mushroom and some other things. Solid.
Closeup of the sticky rice.
Panfried stuffed eggplant ($4.95)
The eggplant was bit too soft and gooey but the crunchy part on top was good.
Steamed bean curd wrap ($4.75)
Enoki mushroom on top. This was another well excuted dish.
Steamed BBQ bun ($4.25)
Not bad but the bun wasn’t fluffy.
2x Corn oatmeal siu mai ($4.95)
You read that right. Corn and oatmeal filling. This was bland and the texture was nowhere like a real siu mai. Skip it.
Mango green tea pancake ($5.95)
Never seen this before everyone liked it. Diced mango and shredded coconut. The pancake had a satisfying bite to it.
Stick with anything mushroom related and you’ll be happy. Suprisingly decent vegetarian offerings at SBK.
