Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House

Lao Shan Dong Homemade Noodle House (wow, that’s a mouthful) is a tiny, low key Taiwanese spot tucked away between Daeji Cutlet House and Morak Korean Restaurant.

Cash only (obviously, duh).

They had on some radio throwback beats which was a bit unexpected but fun. Service is quick and efficient but you’ll need to ask for extra bowls.

The menu is split into noodle, bean thread, rice, dumplings, appetizers, soup and beverages.

Trip #1
We dropped in on a Sunday evening (around 7:00pm) and the place was bumping.

Marinated pork ear (A5) ($5.95)
DSC08059Thinly sliced with a pleasant texture.

Good appetizer to start out meal.

Braised beef flank & tendon with noodle in soup (#3) ($12.99 large)
DSC08064This bowl is HUGE. A large is easily shareable between two people. We asked for spicy but don’t worry, the heat is very subtle. Broth and noodles were good but I would have liked more of a toothsome, springy bite to the noodles.

Flank and tendon was soft and tender.

Boiled pork and vegetable dumpling (#22) ($7.50 for 10)
DSC08067You can tell these babies are handmade. One solo diner loved them so much they only ordered this and then left. Wrapper had a satisfying, chewy bite.

Trip #2
Second time we came on a Sunday evening (around 8:00pm). It wasn’t busy at all.

Apple sidra
DSC01426M’s always has to order a drink with his meal. Cue eye roll.

Boiled seasonal vegetables (A7) ($5.75)
DSC01427Bok choy topped with roasted garlic chips and oyster sauce.

Basic but everyone was craving vegetables so this hit the spot for us.

Braised beef flank with noodle in soup (#1) ($10.99 large)
DSC01429The soup was flavourful and had depth. Abundant of noodles but again, I wanted them firmer.

Strong noodle pull action going on.

Braised beef flank dry noodle (N7) ($10.99 large)
DSC01434The beef flank was better in this dish even though it’s technically the same cut of meat.

Not sure why but it had a chewier, gelatinous bite.

Boiled pork and vegetable dumplings (#22) ($11.50 for 15)
DSC01435We got the larger portion this time around. Dumplings were good like last time.

One of the better beef noodle bowls I’ve had so far in town and easily the most generous!
