By now, you should know I’m pretty skeptical when it comes to Malaysian places. But you never know until you try out a place right? We decided to check out Penang Delight Cafe with that in mind. They have a second location in Marpole. This PDC is located beside Aburi Sushi.
Side view of the restaurant.
Hours. Closed on Tuesday.
Cute sign outside. The Simple Life like that Paris Hilton reality show? 😉
We dropped in on a Thursday afternoon (around 12:30pm) and it was packed. Service is quick, efficient and they came by several times to refill our waters. The inside looks cramped but there’s additional seating in the hallway and in the back.
The roti canai itself was quite good. Pretty flaky. The curry sauce could have used more of a spicy kick.
Curry laksa ($10.95) with beef brisket ($2.00)
Yellow noodle and vermicelli, bean sprouts, fried tofu, boiled egg, fish cake and onions in a coconut curry broth. The broth was surprisingly satisfactory. Good creaminess and decent spice level to it.
The beef brisket wasn’t worth the upgrade.
I liked the two types of noodles but watch out for the potatoes; they were incredibly salty.
Hainese chicken rice ($11.95)
Hainese steamed chicken with chicken broth rice. It also came with a small bowl of soup (heavenly; think Chinese root vegetables) and three sauces to dip the chicken in (soya sauce, sweet chili sauce and ginger sauce).
The chicken was tender, moist and juicy.
The rice was even better; fragrant and so addictive.
I debated whether to get some to go for home.
Finally found a passable laksa. I’d come back to try their bah kut teh and other Malaysian speciality dishes.
