Kin Kao Thai Kitchen

I can’t remember how I first heard about Kin Kao Thai Kitchen but it made it onto my list of places to try.

We dropped in on an early Wednesday evening. No problem getting a table. The inside is hip and modern but still has a laid back, East Van vibe to it. Interesting that the front staff is all Caucasians but the kitchen staff/cooks are Thai.

The dinner menu is broken into starters, rice & noodles, curry and desserts. Short and sweet. There’s also a well curated drink menu.

Sticky rice ($1.00)
DSC03581It’s only a dollar to add onto your main so obviously, we tried one of each. Sticky rice was good and came in traditional style.

Jasmine rice ($1.00)
DSC03580Goes well with their curries. Wasn’t overly fragrant but did the job.

Green curry ($16.00)
DSC03579Chicken with coconut milk, chili, garlic, ginger, Thai eggplants, lime leaves, bamboo shoots, palm sugar, fish sauce and Thai basil. Tons of bamboo shoots in this curry but actually cooked properly. Green curry was creamy, spicy and a solid portion. Had leftovers to take home.

Stir fry with basil ($15.00)
DSC03578Per our waiter’s recommendation, we did half pork and half eggplant. Had no clue you could do that! There was also garlic, long beans, soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, Thai chili, onions and Thai holy basil. This was fantastic. Medium spice level, well balanced in flavour and seasoning, we gobbled this up. This is one of their most popular dishes (along with their phat Thai).

Finally a good Thai discovery! I’ll be back to try many more dishes.
