We know nothing about the Red Deer food scene so we came and checked out The Coconut Room based on a recommendation from a local. This place, Sunworks, has a million things going on.
Sign outside displaying their two features of the day.
Hours for the main store.
There’s a coffee/drink station, books, kitchenware, art gallery and The Coconut Room is located upstairs.
The book area. That sofa looked pretty cozy to nestle in for a few hours.
This was a pretty neat idea: Blind Date with a Book. You choose a book based on the handwritten description. Something different, you know?
They were loving Harry Potter. 20th anniversary already? I must be getting old.
Need some Le Creuset goods? Lots of kitchenware to browse.
Follow the sign to get to The Coconut Room. I had no idea they had a rooftop patio!?!
The upstairs is cute with lots of tables and areas to sit at. We wanted to sit outside so we sat at the one table located at the front entrance. No one mentioned anything about the rooftop patio grrrrr. Got to say, love how the downtown area has a third of the street blocked for a bike lane and tables to eat at. Very cool.
A bunch of pastries at the counter. They looked good but we didn’t save room for any.
Chalkboard of some of the features and drinks available.
The menu is small with chow, soup & salad and baked goods. Click here to see the full menu (1, 2, 3 and 4)
There’s also an Aloha Dinner Club (3 course meal every Thursday).
I guess that’s where the Hawaiian theme comes in?
Tea latte ($5.00)
It didn’t taste like anything to me.
Duo of salads ($9.50)
You can choose from three salads so we went with the Moroccan quinoa and garbonzo masala. The garbonzo masala was amazing! Bursting with flavour and spice. Completely took me by surprise. This was easily the best dish.
Thai coconut chicken curry ($14.50)
Chicken, sweet and red potatoes, galanga root, lemongrass, garlic, chili peppers and carrots. Topped with coconut yogurt and lime. This wasn’t exactly what we were expecting when they said it was a Thai curry. Think more like a stew. This wasn’t bad but flavour were pretty subdued.
Big Kahuna ($12.00)
This was their special of the day. Sausage, pierogies, vegetables and cheese scone over a skillet of eggs. The pierogies reminded me of Cheemo ones. The sausage was better and the scone was actually nice and flaky. Rest of the dish was bad.
It’s a cool spot to walk around and check out but food wise, I wouldn’t be running back anytime soon. Well, maybe just for the garbonzo masala salad.
