Yunnan food in Edmonton? That’s a first! South Silk Road’s main restaurant is located in Calgary but branched out to Edmonton a few months ago. It’s nestled in a random plaza that houses Mythos Greek Restaurant and a bunch of other random businesses (had no clue a Eurosport existed here).
The inside is quite spacious and they’ve clearly found a niche here. All the clientele were Asian. Good sign.
The menu is absolutely massive; it seems to go on and on and on. The menu itself is very nicely done with pictures of every dish and with a high quality gloss to it (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17).
Funny how there were so many “exclusive” little stickers on their specialty dishes.
They brought us out a big container of rice; essential to every Chinese meal.
Sliced beef and tripe in chili sauce ($9.99 small)
It’s available in two sizes (large is $15.99) but the small was a perfect amount to share. Excellently executed. The sliced meats had the perfect balance of spiciness. I hesitate to say numby feeling; maybe the slightest amount. Great mouth feel to them.
Yunnan style spicy lamb ($17.99)
We were debating one last dish and our waitress recommended that we try out their lamb. The cumin is very prominent but I loved it. Again, nice heat level to go along with a mixture of onions, peppers and green onions.
Style spicy pork blood in wok ($19.99)
You don’t see pork blood very often in town so obviously we ordered it. A pretty good variety of pork blood, tripe, spam, cabbage and filled with chili peppers. Super satisfying.

Steamed tilapia with two kinds of chili ($15.99)
The picture in the menu makes this dish look different but when it came out, it reminded us of steamed fish you get at Chinese banquets. Nothing wrong with that; it just wasn’t as unique as the other dishes we tried. Fish comes whole with bones and everything. Perfectly tender and flaky.
Pretty impressed to see more and more Northern Chinese restaurants popping up in town. While the prices are on the higher end, I’d still come back to try more of their dishes. We only broke the surface of things…will need to bring a crew next time.
