Luibueno’s Mexican & Latin Cuisine

Mexican is not the first thing that pops to mind when you’re looking for eats in Hawaii but that’s Luibueno’s. We were originally trying to find Opal Thai Food nearby but they were closed for holidays!

The place was slammed with people. We had to wait a bit for a table to open up for us when we arrived on a Wednesday for dinner but it was even more busy when we left. Very, very popular so keep that in mind. Too many things to choose from on the menu: tapas, ceviches, sopas, burritos, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas and more.

Li Hing mui margarita ($8.00)
DSC05371Classic margarita with fresh lime sour and li hing dusted rim. Goes down easy.

Guacamole de la casa ($8.00)
DSC05372Avocado finished with pico de gallo. The guacamole was good. Fresh chunks of avocado and nicely seasoned. Bonus that they give you chips and salsa on the house to start things off (and I think it’s unlimited) – don’t fill up too much!

Carnitas ($24.00)
DSC05374Traditional Mexican style braised pork served with tortillas and all the fixings. My sis is always asking for substitutes so we got a side of vegetables (we were craving veggies) instead of the normal rice and beans combo. The carnitas were tender and flavourful. Essentially, this is assemble your own tacos style!

The dish also comes with a side of raw onions, salsa and guacamole. Nice.

A nice unexpected find. It hit the spot for both of us and I can see why this place is so popular with the locals. Must be a nice change of pace from their normal offerings.
