Hello late night izakaya. Restaurant Wada is nestled in a really popular area filled with tons of restaurants. We came on a late Wednesday evening and were in time to partake in the late night portion of happy hour (4:00-6:00pm and 9:00-11:00pm).
The parking lot area is small but we snagged a spot right upfront. Look at all the fancy sakes on display atop the bar.
This is the happy hour menu. I didn’t take a picture of the main menu but it’s one of those menus with pictures of all the dishes. Tons of variety here but the kicker here is that they have stoned grilled meats. Expensive (8 slices for $50.00 or 16 slices for $68.00) but it’s only money right?
Service was excellent. Very courteous and our waitress took the time to double check everything for my sister and her gluten intolerance. We were able to grab seats at the bar with no wait. So many options on the menu but we eventually made our decision to share a couple dishes.
Wada mix rice ($9.50)
Seasoned rice with ground beef and shiso leaf in a sizzling pot. Nice crunchy bites to the rice and perfectly seasoned.
Scallop nigiri ($2.75) and eel & cucumber roll ($4.50)
Scallop and sushi roll were from the happy hour menu. The eel and cucumber roll was pretty standard but the scallop nigiri was fresh.
Grill eggplant ($7.50)
Oven grilled eggplant topped with a tomato based meat sauce. Super cheesy, heavy and glutinous. I wouldn’t eat one of these if it was just me. Wish there was less cheese and more eggplant.
Cold dandan noodle ($10.50)
Cold noodle and ground beef served with special sesame sauce. The dandan noodles had a great bite to them. This was one of our favourites.
Sashimi omakase ($21.00 for three kinds)Three types of sashimi selected by the chef’s. Tuna, salmon and a white fish (uku?) I can’t remember. No complaints from either of us.
Good spot especially if you make it out for happy hour! Love how there are so many izakaya’s in Honolulu.
