BRU Coffee + Beer House

BRU is a cool coffee and beer hangout. I’ve yet to go specifically for food but they have a pretty decent selection for drinks. I’m surprised no one’s thought of this idea sooner actually – combining the two seems pretty genius. Craft beer geeks and coffee connoisseurs seem to go hand in hand no?

We dropped by after dinner on a Wednesday night and there were a couple tables occupied. Nice to see that Bru has appealing hours – on the door, it just says “late” for Friday and Saturday but on their website, it’s 1:00am. Sweet! 11:00pm the rest of the time, which is still fantastic.

They have a food menu. Cool that they came around and offered us (and the rest of the tables) some leftover baked goods/snacks. You get peanuts on the house too!

Drinks menu. Lager, ale, cider and “things”. The beermosa ($8.50) sounds promising.

Prices range greatly so make sure you take a look at the menu before you order. First time I came here, I listened to the barman’s suggestion and turned out it was a $15.00 bottle of cider (he “forgot” to mention the price tag). Pretty steep markups – you’ve been warned. Heck, there’s a beer for $29.00 if it tickles your fancy.

One wall holds all their beer selections while the other wall is for coffee.

Closeup of their beer wall. Cool venn diagram to help match their beers to your palate.

They have specials – Wednesday’s are $6.50 Alley Kat pints and Friday is $1.00 off select bottles. It’s Alley Kat so we skipped out on that…

Beer nerds, go at ’em. Here’s all the bottles they had out on display.

It would be nice if they offered some beer flight options but I guess it would be hard given their uncommon/rarer beers are all in bottles. They do offer beer flights ($10.00) for their beer on tap.

Like the jar of bottle caps. Nice touch. Wonder what happens when it’s full.

Mikkeller peter, pale and mary ($8.00), To Øl Releaf Me ($8.00), Hitachino Nest XH ($9.00) and Liefmans goudenband ($13.00)
DSC07805From left to right, the Mikkeller was a pale ale (4.6%), To Øl a lime leave blonde (5.8%), Hitachino Belgian strong ale (8%) and the Liefman a flanders oud bruin style (8%). Hitachino is always good in my books but I think my favourite out of these beers was the Liefmans. It almost has a wine like quality to it. Pleasantly tart and well balanced.

Mikkeller american dream ($7.50)
DSC07808Premium lager that’s also gluten free (4.6%). Gluten free beer is always hit or miss but this one you couldn’t even tell.

Früli ($8.00)
DSC07809Van Diest strawberry beer (4.1%). Smelled like strawberry jam and had a bit of a fizzy taste. If you want something sweet, this is it. More like a dessert beer.

Great spot to grab some craft brews and to mill away the evening with friends. Need more places like this in the city.
