Pho Hoan Pasteur is a staple for when you want to eat quality, consistent Vietnamese food. A second location opened up in the north side last year (see my review here) to give Co Do Hue a run for their money. But that’s beside the point – we’re here to talk about Pho Hoan Pasteur original location. The OG. Located right on Kingsway Avenue, you can’t miss it – just look for the massive Superstore in the same plaza.
I’ve been to Hoan Pasteur a handful of times by now and seriously, you can’t go wrong with any of their pho bowls. The bun bo hue, sour and spicy seafood and beef sate pho are a few of my favourites. They’re always busy but I’ve never had to wait for a table. Service is lightning fast and they have the BEST tea. Seriously, the tea is heavenly. Bonus, they’re one of the few places that come back and bring you new tea when you run out.
The menu consists of three short pages. A couple appetizers, rice plates, vermicelli, beef pho and chicken pho. That’s it folks.
Bun bo hue (#22) ($10.50 large)
The bun bo hue is delicious. So much flavour and depth, this is how BBH should be. You get a decent variety of meats (the beef balls are the best) and the onions add a little bit of sweetness to the broth. Nice level of heat without overpowering the main attraction.
Pho tai (#1) ($9.50 small)
O’s staple whenever we go for pho (which seems all the time). The broth is excellent and look at the nice marbling on their beef. Even though it was a small bowl, she was easily stuffed.
Pho Hoan Pasteur never fails to impress me. The food is delicious, constantly consistent and the prices are easy on the wallet. There’s a reason it’s always packed with customers. Go up to the till to pay when you’re done. I think I’m due for a visit right about now.
