It’s always cool when you stumble upon a brand new place in town, especially when it’s on opening day and you haven’t heard the slightest whiff of its existence. Well, that’s exactly what happened Saturday evening – we were on the prowl for a place to grab some dessert after dinner and honestly, nothing was registering in my mind for south side options. 80 Flavours is in hibernation mode, Dream Tea (pass), Thai Orchid, and Izakaya Tomo were a few I could think of. We decided on Tomo but randomly spotted Simply Yours Cafe, which is located in the same plaza. Boom, done.
We walked into the spot which is huge for a BBT place. There’s an upstairs where a miniature pool table is set up along with a couple tables and card games (we played some Dutch Blitz). On the main floor, there’s a couple tables set up along with a couch to watch some TV. The layout is a bit odd and pretty spaced out so hopefully they can figure something out to make it more homey.
Menu wise, they serve some food (banh mi, sandwiches, and desserts such as cheesecake and macarons) and drinks (bubble tea, smoothies (new), coffee/tea, and café classics). Pretty generic stuff.
Lychee ($4.95), grass jelly special ($4.50) and mango tango ($4.95)
I went with mango tango while L and J went with the lychee and grass jelly special respectively. Nothing really pops back into my mind about their bubble tea, it was your typical stuff.
Simple Yours no longer has crazy hours since I first visited (it was open at 7am originally and closed 1am on Friday/Saturday) but 11pm I guess is “late” for the area. The drinks were decent but nothing out of the ordinary. Funny how so many new bubble tea spots have opened within the same time frame (Purple Bubble Tea and Yumioca). Hopefully this spurs some healthy competition and increases quality into Edmonton’s pretty sad BBT scene. Here’s to hoping.
