Tres Carnales Taqueria

Pickings are slim in Edmonton when it comes to finding a good Mexican joint in town. Key word – good. You pretty much have Tres Carnales and Café del Sol. Ok ok, I guess you can expand and broaden the definition to include other South American style food, such as El Rancho Spanish Restaurant and Mamenche’s. I guess there are some good spots, now that I think of it!

Anyways, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you already have heard the hype on Tres Carnales. Located right smack in the middle of downtown, this place is always packed. We went on a Friday for lunch and surprisingly, the line wasn’t that bad. So instead of trying out Baba Finkelsteins, which was my original plan, we grabbed some takeout from Tres.

Clearly, we both weren’t thinking because we should have ordered some guacamole and papas fritas. Sadly, these tacos won’t fill you up. I was still hungry afterwards. You can choose between ordering four tacos ($10.48), three quesadillas ($12.14) or a torta ($13.33), which is a sandwich for you non-Spanish speaking gringos.

FYI, they aren’t open on Saturdays for lunch! Don’t make the same mistake I did. I will give that Tres Carnales has a cool, hip vibe with some awesome graffiti/art murals displayed throughout the restaurant. Hipster central, definitely, but there is a good mix of the work crowd intermingled to give the atmosphere some balance.

Cochinita pibil tacos ($10.48)
Yucatecan style Alberta pork shoulder. The salsa verde that came with the tacos was tasty, but could have used some heat/kick to it. The pork shoulder was flavourful although messy! By the end, the bottom of my takeout container was soaked from the sauce. The tortillas are doubled up, soft and thin enough that they don’t take away from the main ingredients.

Pollo ($10.48)
Marinated and roasted locally farmed chicken. My friend ordered this one and she quite enjoyed it.

I’ve only been twice to Tres Carnales now but it’s definitely a cool spot to bring out of towners or perhaps a date. I still think it’s overhyped, but at least the prices are much more reasonable than their sister restaurant, Rostizado.
