Banana Leaf Tropical Cuisine

I don’t do many repeat posts on places I’ve visited before but daaymmmn, Banana Leaf Tropical Cuisine is seriously the best place. If I lived in Calgary, I’m pretty sure I would come here on a weekly basis. Totally worth the drive out to the northeast. You want legit Malaysian? This is THE SPOT.

We decided to try out two new dishes but seriously, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on their menu. Everything looks so good and it’s crazy cheap! Hidden gems are bomb. We went on a Sunday relatively early (11:30am) but within a half hour, the place was busy. Make sure you get there early if you don’t want to wait.

Deep fried tofu (#9) ($5.50)
Hot, crunchy, crispy, this is the perfect appetizer to order. Plus, it’s the only thing my sis can eat on their appy menu otherwise we’d be all over their roti canai and spicy glutinous rice rolls (apparently, they only make these once a week starting on Mondays, you’re welcome for the tip).

Seafood tom yum soup(#25) ($10.95)
Generous portions of seafood (shrimp, fish, balls, etc.) along with a mixture of vegetables (tomatoes, bean sprouts and cilantro). The tom yum soup was light, fragrant and just the right amount of sweetness to it. The lemongrass is prominent and hits you right away, in a good way. Words can’t describe how good it is.

Hainanese chicken laksa (#28) ($11.50)
We really liked the hainanese chicken in the lakso soup combo. Much more than when we had it previously on it’s own. Generous portions of chicken (one whole drumstick and a 4-5 smaller pieces) along with several pieces of tofu. The laksa broth is unreal. I don’t know how they make it so rich, creamy, and spicy but the kicker here is it has the perfect heat level to it.

Matcha green tea with red bean ($5.50)
So sad that their shaved ice machine is broken (apparently it’s been in limbo for quite some time now). We settled for a matcha green tea with red bean. Best way to cool off your taste buds.

If you haven’t been yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR ombre? Delicious food, super friendly and accommodating staff (aka. just let them know if you have allergies or intolerances), and unreal prices. Definitely date worthy if your taking out someone that likes to eat. 😉
