St. Albert surprisingly has a decent amount of restaurants in the ‘hood. A co-worker and I wanted to try something different for lunch so we decided to check out Jack’s Burger Shack on a Thursday. We just missed the lunch rush (score!) and were able to grab a seat at the counter. Good spot as you can see everything being cooked and the fries being blow-torched (what!).
I like how all of Jack’s burgers can be substituted for a chicken breast if you say don’t eat beef and they also have one vegetarian patty on the menu. All the staff were very easy going and it’s always great supporting a family run joint. We took a look at the chalkboard menus up on the walls and decided to go with a few things.
Homemade chickpea patty with LTO, jack sauce and bleu cheese. I’m no vegan (clearly) but the brontosaurus sounded interesting so I gave it a shot. The chickpea patty was surprisingly very flavourful. As many people have said, the patties are bigger than the buns, which I don’t mind one bit. Also an interesting tidbit I found out was that their buns are made specifically for their shop from Safeway (who woulda thunk)!
Jack’d Up fries ($5.00)
Hand cut fries with jack sauce, cheese slices and onion. It’s interesting how they blow torch their cheese slices – can’t say I’ve ever seen that before on fries. The jack sauce is what makes these fries good!
Overall, Jack’s is a quaint little spot – nothing mind blowing but tasty burgers, fries and shakes. Speaking of shakes, I will have to try one next time as everyone else seemed to be ordering them. Their sister restaurant, Cerdo Tacos + Tequila, is located right next door. Rooftop patio looks pretty sweet for the summer.
