I have been craving ramen for quite some time now. Man, I wish Edmonton was more like Vancouver/Toronto/Montreal/even Calgary…alas, what can you do. I’ve actually heard about Yuzen several times from co-workers and friends and coincidentally, it is right by the barbershop that I frequent (shout out to Barbershopboyz – it’s tough to find a good barbershop). Anyways, this review is only for Yuzen’s ramen which we went to try on a nice, sunny Saturday afternoon.
I like places that specialize on doing a few things well and only focusing on ramen Saturday’s is a good sign. Five types of ramen to choose from.
Miso ramen ($11.00)
Ground pork and bean sprouts. It was decent but I wasn’t blown away by the flavours. The noodles had a nice firm, chewy texture to it but it’s not homemade (if you are a purist). It has a “spicy” sign beside it but I didn’t taste any spiciness to it.
2x Tonkatsu ($11.00)
My friend thoroughly enjoyed it and same with my dad, except he thought it was a bit on the salty side. I will have to try this one next time as I am more of a fan of tonkatsu (but wanted to order something different). An extra egg will set you back $1.00.
Ramen places are a dime a dozen in this town, especially good ones. Yuzen is one of your best bets to get your ramen fix. That being said, I’ve heard nothing but great things about their sushi so I will have to check them out for sushi sometime soon hopefully!
